This post is inspired by some of you asking me about nutritional yeast! I talk about: health benefits, how to make kickass cheeses, and where to find the best prices when shopping around for nutritional yeast.
Nutritional yeast has a number of health benefits. If you are a vegan and/or vegetarian these benefits will hopefully fit in perfectly into your daily cooking routine.
- contains vitamins B1 – B6
- great source for zinc
- fiber, and
- reduces inflammation caused by bacterial infections
More often than not, nutritional yeast comes in a flakey format. The texture closely resembles crumbling cheeses, such as grated parmesan. Therefore, the yeast flakes are a perfect addition to your pasta, salads, wraps, etc. Let’s not forget, it’s also one of the main ingredient when making vegan cheese.

Where should you buy it ? Are you overpaying for your nutritional yeast? and how do you know if a specific brand will taste good?
Before I answer these questions, I think I should make a clear distinction. That is, all my answers vary depending on where you are located in the world. For example, I personally had a very hard time actually finding nutritional yeast in Cologne.
If you, say, live in North America your search is perhaps more intense, because there are a lot of brands out there to chose from. However, this means, you will probably get a lot more fair prices than Cologne, where there is not much brand competition.
Living in Cologne, I learned pretty quickly that Amazon is my friend. It’s my connection to brands and fair prices (of course, shipping prices add to my costs). Another company is use a lot since I have moved to Cologne is iherb! Really good products, reliable and fair prices. However, some brands can’t be shipping to Germany.
Therefore, Amazon is my go-to for nutritional yeast. Tip: to get all the health benefits from nutritional yeast, look for a brand that’s organic (bio). Also, if you have never tried yeast flakes before, invest in a small sample first. Once you know you love it you can then buy in bulk, which then will reduce your costs.
Here is the actual brand I have used: Indigo Nutrition Organic Yeast (note: if you use the link above to make your order I do get a small kick-back). The brand that I always buy when I travel to North America is : Bragg – the taste is amazing, the brand always uses ORGANIC ingredients, and the price is AMAZING! You can also buy it from Amazon but it’s PRICEY (due to shipping costs): Bragg Premium Nutritional Yeast Seasoning
All this to say | yes, if you live in Germany you will overpay for your nutritional yeast. Learn which brand is your favourite by trying out brands that talk to you. And ask around – see what your friends like to use!
